#280characters

Twitter has reportedly testing the idea of increasing the traditional 140 character limit for tweets to 280 characters. This means that people will essentially be able to say twice as much in one tweet. Let's look at the good and bad of this.

Scrolling through tweets that included the #280characters it seems like most people aren't too happy with the idea. This made me think, maybe this could be something good and constructive. Now granted, there are a ton of twitter rants out there but the reality is that conversations have been limited because of this character count limit. I think this could increase dialogue about things and maybe...just maybe we could progress from this age of ranting on ranting. Maybe conversations about politics can have a little more depth to them besides the usual "I'm right" "You're wrong" mentalities that seems to common...

On a more realistic note, I think this is a horrible idea. I can't help but think this new idea is an attempt for Twitter to compete with Facebook (which I think those posts should have a character limit, am I right?) and give people more room to say what they feel like they must... Please Twitter for the sake of the little sanity we have left thanks to social media, don't do this.

  1. I like the way you're looking at this change from a positive point. The HOPE is that twitter users will actually start having more in depth conversations instead of just the 'I'm right' and 'you're wrong' kind of back and forth. I feel like typically those kinds of debates happen over particular subjects and tweets to begin with while more pressing issues grow more legitimate debating. But, like you said, it will be just more room for people to rant probably. Who knows, maybe people will surprise us? .... But, I'm sure they won't.

  2. For me personally, I've learned that I have an EXTREMELY short attention span. I also don't care too much about ranting and honestly have ALWAYS loved twitter because I can simply share that "I'm hungry." Since first making a Twitter account since 2010 I realized that it's went from a short update-use social account to a very powerful tool for the world. But clearly there current system is working, why try to change it?
