#TakeaKneel

Good evening everyone,

Football season is here (RISE UP!) and I want to present a couple of things in an attempt to start an important discussion. Numerous NFL teams have begun protesting by kneeling or locking arms during the national anthem. The president has weighed in on these actions and it has only seemed to make things worse.

I can't help but wonder if taking a knee truly demonstrates contesting the president or what our country holds dear, our anthem. Does protesting the national anthem truly contest the president himself? Is there not a more appropriate demonstration?

Check out these articles CNN & NYT

I think it will be interesting watch and see how president Trump uses the same media that he tends to lash out at to convey his opinions and stances regarding topics like this.

  1. Brian, I have to believe that those athletes who are choosing to bend a knee or lock arms aren't doing so to be malicious or disrespectful. Rather, I prefer to view it as a powerful show of unity. With CK starting the trend, I doubt he knew it would evolve into such a subversive form of protest.

Here's another article from The New Yorker which goes into detail.

  2. Hey Brian! I honestly believe that people who choose to take a knee are simply just coming together as one. My husband is on his second enlistment in the Marine Corps and also has some opinions about it. He feels that though many have fought, they fought so that we can have opinions. So whether or not he agrees with the choices that others make, he will "gladly put his life on the line so that others can make those choices" if that makes sense. His words, not mine! Great post though. You asked some really good questions that made me think deeper.
